H-Beam Steel: A Buyer's Guide to Grades, Sizes and Standards
H-beam steel is one of the most widely used sections in steel structure buildings. It appears in industrial plants, warehouses, bridges and high-rise projects because it combines high load capacity with efficient use of material. If you are sourcing H-beam for the first time, or simply want to check that your specification is correct, this guide covers the practical points that matter in the buying process.
What Is H-Beam Steel?
H-beam, also called H-section or wide-flange beam, is a hot-rolled structural steel section with two parallel flanges connected by a vertical web, forming a cross-section that looks like the letter H.
Because the flanges are wider and more uniform than those of ordinary I-beams, H-beam offers a larger section modulus and better bending resistance. In many projects, this means a lighter H-beam can do the work of a heavier I-beam, reducing total steel consumption and foundation loads.
H-Beam vs I-Beam: More Than a Shape Difference
The difference is not just visual. Ordinary I-beams have tapered flanges with sloping inner surfaces. H-beams have parallel flanges of uniform thickness, which makes the section more efficient under bending and compression.
In practical terms:
- Higher section modulus. H-beam carries more load at the same weight.
- Wider flanges. Better stability for columns and beams under lateral loads.
- Less steel for the same job. Under equal performance requirements, H-beam usually uses less material than an ordinary I-beam.
Key Specifications to Check
When selecting H-beam, focus on four points: material grade, dimensions, execution standard and surface treatment.
1. Material Grade
Under the Chinese standard system, Q235B and Q355B are the most common structural grades for hot-rolled H-beam.
- Q235B is a carbon structural steel with minimum yield strength of 235 MPa. It suits general structures and is the default grade for many standard projects.
- Q355B is a higher-strength low-alloy steel with minimum yield strength of 355 MPa. For larger spans or lighter structures, it is usually the better choice, since the higher strength often pays for itself in reduced tonnage.
Common international comparisons (for orientation only):
- Q235B: approximately comparable to S235JR (EN 10025), SS400 (JIS G3101) and ASTM A36
- Q355B: approximately comparable to S355JR / S355J2 (EN 10025), and close to ASTM A572 Gr. 50 in yield strength
Note: equivalent grades are rarely identical in every detail. Always confirm chemical composition and mechanical properties against the material test certificate (MTC), and state on your order whether impact testing (for example Charpy) is required, as it is not always included by default.
2. Dimensions and Sizes
An H-beam is specified as H × B × t1 × t2:
- H is the section height in mm
- B is the flange width in mm
- t1 is the web thickness in mm
- t2 is the flange thickness in mm
For example, H 300 × 300 × 10 × 15 means 300 mm height, 300 mm flange width, 10 mm web thickness and 15 mm flange thickness.
Chinese mills commonly roll H-beam from around H 100 × 100 up to H 900 × 300. Hot-rolled standard lengths are usually 6 m, 9 m or 12 m. Fixed project lengths can be ordered, and cutting to exact length can be arranged before shipment.
3. Standard
In China, the dimension, tolerance and inspection standard for hot-rolled H-section is GB/T 11263, which also defines theoretical weights, marking and inspection rules. Material standards are separate: Q235B follows GB/T 700 and Q355B follows GB/T 1591.
For export orders, mills can also roll to ASTM, JIS or EN specifications. State clearly in the contract which standard governs dimensions and which governs material, especially when a third-party inspection company is involved.
4. Surface Treatment
H-beam can be shipped in several surface conditions:
- Bare / mill finish. No protective coating. Suitable for indoor structures that will be painted after installation.
- Rust-preventive primer. A shop primer protects the steel during transport and early construction.
- Hot-dipped galvanized. The better choice for coastal, marine or high-humidity environments.
Choose the surface treatment based on the installation environment. Bare steel in a coastal project usually means avoidable maintenance later.
Why Buyers in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa Source H-Beam from China
China is one of the world's largest producers of structural steel, and its H-beam export channel is well established. Buyers in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa choose Chinese H-beam for four reasons:
- Complete size range. Common sizes from H 100 × 100 to H 900 × 300 are available from stock or from rolling programs.
- Flexible delivery. Container loading, breakbulk shipment and mixed cargo with other steel products are all practical.
- Competitive pricing. Large production scale and an efficient export supply chain keep prices competitive.
- Standards flexibility. Mills can roll to GB, ASTM, JIS and EN specifications for export orders.
How to Avoid Specification Mistakes
The most common error in H-beam procurement is an incomplete specification. A height alone is not enough, and "H200" is not a full specification. A complete inquiry should include:
- Full section size: H × B × t1 × t2
- Steel grade and the applicable standard
- Length, quantity and bundling requirements
- Surface treatment
- Special requirements such as beveling, end caps or marking
Always request the material test certificate (MTC). It records the heat number, chemical composition, mechanical properties and the applied standard, allowing the buyer to trace the material to the exact mill heat. Project consultants and third-party inspectors normally require it.
